This snake is found in savanna from Swaziland northwards into Mpumalanga and Limpopo extending into Mozambique and Zimbabwe as well as eastern Botswana.

Although it spends most of its life underground in search of termites and their eggs, individuals may be found under rocks or logs or in the roots of bushes during land-clearing operations. When found on the surface they wriggle furiously. Harmless and no threat to humans.
