The Herald Snake, also known as the Red-lipped or White-lipped Snake, is nocturnal and averages 30-50 cm in length.

It is olive-brown to grey in colour, usually with white flecks on the body and with iridescent black temples. The lip colour may vary from white to yellow, orange or red. This snake is found in damp localities where it hunts frogs, especially toads. When confronted it will raise the front third of its body off the ground forming an s-shape, flatten the head and lunge forward repeatedly in mock strikes.

The venom of the Herald Snake is mild and may cause light swelling if the snake is allowed to chew.
