Reticulated Centipede-eater

A smallish slender snake that averages 40 cm with a maximum length of 54 cm. It is grey to olive brown above, often with dark-edged scales, and with a dark collar on the nape. Juveniles have up to 12 dark blotches down the neck onto the back that fade with age.

A smallish slender snake that averages 40 cm with a maximum length of 54 cm. It is grey to olive brown above, often with dark-edged scales, and with a dark collar on the nape. Juveniles have up to 12 dark blotches down the neck onto the back that fade with age. It inhabits moist savanna where it seeks shelter amongst rocks and under logs. It feeds exclusively on centipedes and scorpions.

The Reticulated Centipede-eater is back-fanged with a small gape and rarely attempts to bite. Its venom is mild and may cause slight swelling in humans. Quite a common snake in some parts of its range.
