Map indicating the distribution of the Sundavall’s Shovel-snout in Southern Africa.

This is a small snake that averages 18-25 cm but reaches 36 cm in length. The snout is characteristically pointed. It is found in a variety of habitats from fynbos to moist savanna, Karoo and grasslands extending into dry savanna where it can be found under rocks and logs as well as in deserted termite mounds.

When threatened it coils and uncoils like the old clock springs. Sundevall’s Shovel-snout feeds largely on reptile eggs but will also take small lizards and invertebrates. It is harmless and poses no threat to humans. If handled, it may press the sharp spike on the tail tip into the hand.
