Jumping Spider (Family Salticidae) - Harmless.
These small charismatic spiders are common around human dwellings, in the garden and on walls in and out the house. They are free-living, not building webs and hunt with their good vision. They feed on flies and mosquitoes and a range of other small insects. They come in a huge variety of colours and sizes but are usually smaller than a pea.
They are quite intelligent, with good vision. You can watch them calculating the distances between objects they want to jump to or insects they are hunting. These spiders can jump about 30cm. They cannot bite people or pets and are great to have around the house to control insects.

Eastern Bark Snake (Hemirhagerrhis nototaenia) fro

Eastern Bark Snake (Hemirhagerrhis nototaenia) from Hoedspruit, Limpopo.

A slender and docile snake that averages around 30cm but can exceed 40cm in length. These secretive snakes hide under bark and in the cracks of trees. They hunt lizards and skinks and have been observed using the orange tail tip to lure lizards into striking range. They often hang from branches whilst swallowing prey.

They occupy moist and arid savanna as well as lowland forest. This well-camouflaged snake is cryptic between the bark of trees where it ambushes its prey. When handled it seldom attempts to bite and the venom of this species has virtually no effect on humans.

On-site training for the team at a Solar Plant in the Western Cape today.

The delegates get to work with a number of venomous species, learning the safest techniques for catching and releasing the snakes. At no point do they make physical contact with the snakes - there is no need for physical contact with the snakes and it goes against the protocols of most corporate sites who are serious about the health and safety of their teams.

There are a number of snake gaiters on the market, from entry level budget ones to high end lightweight gaiters.

Gaiters offer leg protection, and the use of these are advisable, as 84% of snakebites are below the knee. Ideally you want to make sure they are comfortable, and if it’s possible, try them on.

Those that are quick to put on are great for removal purposes, as one is usually in a hurry. Make sure they’ve been tested by a reputable company.

Guide to buying snake handling equipment - Snake Tubes

We make extensive use of snake tubes, both on our courses and for removals. They’re an easy way to contain and safely transport venomous snakes. The snakes generally see the darkness of the tube as an escape route and are easily guided into the tube. When buying a tube, make sure it’s obviously marked, and has ventilation holes in the lid (usually covered by foam for spitting snakes, and to prevent nose rub during transportation) and has a decent handle. Holes down the sides of the tube are not advisable as they let light into the tube.

Guide to buying snake handling equipment - Snake Hooks.

Snake hooks are pretty straight forward and work really well on the adders. Make sure the “U” of the hook will be big enough for a decent sized snake. The “V” hooks generally don’t work well for large adders. Experienced snake handlers use hooks to ‘hook and tail’ a snake, and in that scenario any hook will work. Some handlers even use tongs for this.
