Dwarf Sand Snake (Psammophis angolensis) - Mildly

Dwarf Sand Snake (Psammophis angolensis) - Mildly Venomous.

A beautifully marked little snake with a broad dark brown stripe down the centre of the back. The neck has one or two dark collars with two thin white stripes across the head.

The Dwarf Sand Snake is the smallest in the genus, averaging 25 – 30 cm with a maximum length of 50 cm. It is a quick-moving snake that is active during the day, hunting its prey.

If disturbed it will dart off and freeze in typical sand snake fashion. It is a secretive snake and seldom attempts to bite when handled. It occurs from northern Gauteng northwards into North West, Limpopo, western Mpumalanga and as far as Tanzania and the DRC.

Spotted Bush Snake (Philothamnus semivariegatus) - harmless.

An alert, day-active snake, that climbs well and is often found between the walls and ceilings of outbuildings, where it hunts for geckos. Sadly, this harmless snake is often mistaken for a Green Mamba or Boomslang and needlessly killed.

The body is bright green to a copper-green with distinct blackish spots on the front half of the snake, but little or no dark marks on the back half. The belly is yellowish to white and the pupil orange.

This snake has keeled belly scales which enables it to climb up the bark of a tree or even up face-brick walls. It is commonly found in suburban gardens and juveniles are often killed by domestic cats.

Zebra Cobra (Naja nigricincta nigricincta) - Highl

Zebra Cobra (Naja nigricincta nigricincta) - Highly Venomous.

The Zebra Cobra occurs from central Namibia northwards into Angola and is one of four spitting snakes in Namibia. It averages 80-120 cm and may reach 1.8 m in length. It is largely nocturnal and is often found on tarred roads, especially after rain.

This is a shy snake that will choose to escape but will spread a hood and spit and bite readily if cornered.

The venom of the Zebra Cobra is potently cytotoxic, causing pain, swelling, blistering and in many instances tissue damage. Fatalities are not common. The venom of this snake is not used in the manufacturing process of polyvalent antivenom and the effectiveness of the antivenom to neutralise the venom of the Zebra Cobra is not well known.

The neck region and belly of a Mozambique Spitting Cobra (Naja mossambica) from Pretoria, Gauteng. The belly is often a salmon pink to orange colour but may also be a mother-of-pearl colour. The dark bands or blotches in the neck region may extend onto the body. The overall body colour is light to medium or dark brown, often with dark skin between the scales visible. This snake is highly venomous with a cytotoxic venom.

Berg Adder (Bitis atropos) from Mpumalanga, South Africa. Venomous.

There are at least four isolated populations of the Berg Adder, largely occurring at high elevations, except for the Western Cape and Eastern Cape where they may occur at sea level. This snake averages 30 – 40 cm, reaching 60 cm in length. It is fond of basking, especially on mountain paths and rocky ledges.

The Berg Adder is a bad-tempered snake that hisses loudly and strikes easily. Its venom is mainly neurotoxic and attacks the facial and optic nerves. Breathing may be affected by the venom and most patients may need to be ventilated. There is no antivenom for the bite of this snake, but no fatalities have been recorded.

Péringuey’s Adder (Bitis peringueyi) from near Swakopmund, Namibia. Venomous.

A small adder that averages 25 cm in length. This is a desert specialist that inhabits the soft wind-blown dunes of the Namib Desert.

It is well known for its ability to sidewind, which is the only effective way to negotiate the soft, unstable dune sand. It also buries itself in the sand to escape heat and to await its prey in ambush. The eyes are positioned on the top of the head allowing them to see prey whilst buried. It is a lizard specialist, preferring sand lizards of the genus Meroles as well as barking geckos.

The venom of this snake is mildly cytotoxic, causing pain and some swelling, but is not considered dangerous to humans. Antivenom is not required or effective for this species.

Short-snouted Grass Snake (Psammophis brevirostris) - Mildy venomous.

A medium sized, fast-moving snake that is active during the day. It averages 40-60cm but may exceed a meter in length. This snake is fond of basking and very quick to escape. It may flee into low shrubs.

If handled it will not hesitate to bite. Individuals captured by the tail will spin and snap a piece of tail off in order to escape. The Short-snouted Grass Snake feeds on lizards, snakes and small rodents.

It is a common snake in Gauteng and occurs throughout most of the central part of southern Africa and as far south as the Eastern Cape. Also found in Limpopo, North West and elsewhere further north.The venom of this snake is mild and poses no threat to humans.

Brown Button Spider (Latrodectus geometricus)

These common spiders are often found around human dwellings – in the garage, under window sills, in the swimming pool pump box… They build a messy web and have large white, spiky egg sacs. They are usually a brown colour with darker bands on the joint of each leg. The abdomen is grey to white often with a series of dots. The characteristic hourglass shape under the abdomen is orange to red.

They are inoffensive and when disturbed, drop to the floor in a tight ball with the legs tucked in.
Bites are rare and usually occur when the spiders are squashed by accident in clothes or when lifting a box and trapping the spider with your fingers.

The venom is highly neurotoxic and causes pain, sweating, nausea, disorientation and shortness of the breath. A bite from a Brown Button Spider is unpleasant, but easily treatable and no deaths have been recorded.
