Of the 150-odd described species of scorpions in Southern Africa (and many more to be described), only a few of the Thick-tailed scorpions of the genus Parabuthus are considered to be of medical significance. Two species, Parabuthus transvaalicus and P. granulatus, account for 4 – 5 fatal stings in South Africa annually.
