Namaqua Burrower

A large scorpion up to 13 cm with the tail extended. It is black with yellow legs and brown pincers with black tips. Males have longer pincers than females.

A large scorpion up to 13 cm with the tail extended. It is black with yellow legs and brown pincers with black tips. Males have longer pincers than females.

It is common on the west coast of South Africa from the Cederberg up to Springbok. It can be found under rocks but is also active on warm nights. It is usually found in rocky habitats where it creates a shallow depression under rocks.

It may be confused with other burrower scorpions but has a restricted range. Despite its size, the sting of this species may cause pain but is not medically important.
