Long-tailed Garter Snake

One of the larger Garter snakes that averages 50 cm but may reach 1 m in length. It is confined to the wetter central eastern parts of southern Africa and is active at night.

One of the larger Garter snakes that averages 50 cm but may reach 1 m in length. It is confined to the wetter central eastern parts of southern Africa and is active at night.

Juveniles have 17 – 20 buff bands on a darker background that fade with age. In adults the belly is white often with pink to orange on the sides. There may also be some orange on the snout.

Little is known about the venom of this snake, but bites are known to cause nausea, vomiting, pain, swelling and blurred vision. This snake may be able to inflict a serious bite.
