With a venom yield of up to 600 mg (double that of a Puff Adder) and fangs that can exceed 4 cm in length, the Gaboon Adder (Bitis gabonica) is highly venomous. In South Africa it occurs from Mtunzini northwards along the coast in northern KZN. Fortunately no bites from this snake have been documented, patially because it is not commonly encountered and its reluctance to bite. If encountered it will inflate its body, turn the head sideways and hiss loudly. Gaboon Adder venom is largely cytotoxic but, loke the Puff Adder, also contains haemotoxins.

Black Mambas (Dendroaspis polylepis) are impressive in both size and agility. In this video, an adult mamba demonstrates its remarkable climbing ability, lifting nearly a third of its body off the ground.

While they can raise themselves to gain height, tales of mambas “standing up” to meet someone eye-to-eye or striking people on the chest or head are simply myths.
